Kids Camera

Mrs. Sj Williams from UK - 4 out of 5.

Very bad quality photos, BUT my daughter loves it and that's all that matters!!! The batteries seem to run out quite quickly and you have to remember this is a toy rather than a camera, but as my 7 year old is not David Bailey it doesn't really matter ;-)

What use is a camera when you can't see what you are taking?

M. Harrison from London, UK - 2 out of 5.

When designing a 'junior' version of an adult product, it is crucial to understand what the needs are that need to be met in preparing it for a child. In the case of a digital camera, I guess there are three: what-I-see-is-what-I-get clarity, ease of use, and ruggedness.

Our three year old is obsessed with his mum's very cheap and simple mobile phone - or more particularly its photo and video capability. It doesn't say much for the Vtech camera that he prefers the mobile phone.

The reason is simple. The Vtech offers the child two means of looking at the image: a binocular viewfinder (and have you ever seen a small child successfully use that kind of viewfinder?); and a screen on the back of the camera - the standard viewing method for digital cameras nowadays. Five or ten years ago this might have seemed acceptable. But not now. The screen is small, and the quality is appalling. It is so bad that the child will struggle to make out an image indoors, or in artificial light; it even struggles outdoors on a gloomy day. This is such a fundamental failing the child is likely to lose interest immediately. But if you can persuade them to trust to blind faith and press the button, the quality of the image they capture will be extremely poor by current digital camera standards - even at this price.

It is great that the camera has a video function too, but since the image is just as poor in this mode, the benefit is more apparent than real.

When it comes to ease of use, the camera scores about 5 out of 10. There are few buttons, well located, but they are not entirely intuitive. Shouldn't a child's camera have one button to take the picture, and another beside it to see the result instantly? The Vtech isn't that straightforward - though it does go to the effort of providing a 'stamp' feature which overlays templated 'stamps' on your pictures. This seems pretty pointless: it's beyond the understanding of a very young child and an older one will find it laughable compared to computer game functionality.

For ruggedness the camera does much better. It's very graspable and solid. Ours has had insufficient use to be severely tested, but when thrown aside in frustration, it stands up pretty well...

I'm a bit of a fan of Vtech products generally, so I am puzzled that this one falls so far short of their normal standards.

One very happy nephew!

Muggy - 3 out of 5.

This Christmas present became an extra appendage to my nephew; he yelled whenever it wasn't in reach and ran around like a crazy person popping some of the most dreadful photos I've ever seen. That said, he's just 4 1/2 years old and it simply gives him joy that he's like the grown-ups, taking his own photos. The thing worth noting is that he received masses of presents ... pirate ship, transformer, toy metal detector ... and this was the one that he kept to hand.

I would expect that it's colour (we bought blue) and design make it attractive to kids, too.

I agree that the photo quality is poor though that wasn't the reason that we bought this for him. He will surely learn things from having it and seeing such pleasure - and knowing he will be able to use it for some time to come - is the main thing.

I would add that the comments about battery life from other reviewers were most helpful so we bought a battery recharger and had the whole thing fully charged by the time he opened it.

Terrible resolution and it looses all your pictores when the battery goes flat

Mum from London, UK - 1 out of 5.

The camera is fun and sturdy and the kids like to play with it, but:

The resolution is 640x480, which is as low as you can possibly get. The pictures do look really rubbish - you'll never want to print one.
The exposure is dreadful - 80% of the pictures are unusable.
When the battery goes flat, you loose all the pictures you've taken, which is really bad when you've just promised your 5 year old he can look at all his christmas pictures on the PC.
No rechargable batteries.

Vtech have saved a lot of money by using the cheapest possible electronics inside, and not cared that it gives a very disappointing user experience. Shame on them.

Great fun and simple to use

Ms. J. Taylor from Somersham, UK - 5 out of 5.

My 5 year old son bought this camera with his birthday money and he has been delighted with it. It is so simple to use that my 2 year old can even manage to take pictures. The graphics are fun and both boys love the video function. We have had the camera for 2 months now and it has really been through the mill in that time but is still working well. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to help their children develop an interst in photography but not wanting their own camera's to get broken!

Excellent toy in line with other reviews.

Michail Panagiotou from Athens, Greece - 5 out of 5.

I ordered this camera for my kids, actually 2, a pink and a blue for girl/boy.

The boy who is just 3 years old liked it but doesn't use it so much. The girl (around 5) is addicted and plays with it all the time.

Nice buy, recommended.

Waste of money

Mr. M. Marshall from Scotland - 1 out of 5.

Brought this camera for my 3 year old son. After six months it has stopped working. Don't expect Vtech to help because they wont all they do is offer 20% off your next toy. DO NOT BUY GO FOR FISHERPRICE INSTEAD

Breaks Continually

Ms. L. J. Branch from UK - 1 out of 5.

We have had to send our product back once because it refused to switch on even after several sets of new batteries. They sent us a new one but less than 3 months later - the same fault - wont switch on. We arn't giving it a particularly hard time so this is really maddening. When it did work - the pictures were worse than useless - completely fuzzy. Dont waste your money on this.

Great for little people

Polly Mck from Lancashire, England - 5 out of 5.

We bought this camera for our youngest sons 5th birthday, since getting it he and his older brother (7) haven't stopped playing with it, they love all of the functions from just taking a photo to the photo turning into a jigsaw puzzle in one of the games. The one thing I would recommed is that you get/use an extra memory card as the built in memory gets full very quickly especially when using video mode, otherwise it's a fun easy to use (the 5yr old even transfers his own pics to the computer) product which my boys love.

V tech camera

Ms. K. L. Parker from great britain Wales - 3 out of 5.

This camera is ideal for a child under 8. But it's too childish for an older child.
I've bought it as a gift for my 7 year old grandson & I feel this is a great way to get him interested in photography.

VTech kidizoom digital camera

L. bridge from Scotland - 3 out of 5.

My 4 year old grandson loves this toy, and it is a toy don't forget! I gave it a three star for overall rating, as although it has a flash it won't take pictures indoors properly. Its good in natural daylight though for a toy and I'm sure all kids will love it.

Great first camera

Kate Taylor from England - 4 out of 5.

My four year old grandson loved this camera, it is easy to use and durable. He liked the games on it too even though they were basic he could manage them and has played on them for ages. We did get a memory card which meant he could take hundreds of videos and pictures which worked well as he took 275 photo's and 20 videos on the first day. Would be better if it had a "delete all" button but other than that this is an excellent first camera that can take the knocks and drops a four year old.

Poor camera wrapped up in a child friendly case.

David from Liverpool - 1 out of 5.

My 4 year old son finds this easy to hold and take pictures. But the pictures are of such a low quality any long term memories will be useless. I would not recommend this product until they upgrade the camera inside the case. The camera is so poor my Nokia 6300 phone takes better pictures and that's only 2 megapixel. Since the let down of this purchase I've let my son use my own Nikon compact digital and his photos have been great.

Camera

Ms. Katrina Beck from England - 5 out of 5.

This is a fantastic camera and really simple to use. I have had fun taking pictures with this camera and editing images with the software to create funny pictures of the family to put on facebook! My children both play with the camera and the pictures quality is fantastic. My 3 year old is able to take very good pictures using the camera and it is interesting to see his viewpoint on the world by the pictures he takes! The pictures are really easy to load onto a pc using the software provided. I recommend this 100%.

V-Tech Kids Camera

P. Prenice from UK-Glasgow - 5 out of 5.

Brilliant. Easy for little hands to us. My grandson is 3 years olda nad can take a picture perfectly, due to being able to look through 2 lenses. Easy to use instructions, and very sturdy, especially when a 3 year old decides to drop it. Would receommend this to anyone with kids.

Value for money

Julie Price - 5 out of 5.

I read the other reviews for this product and wasn't put off by the negative comments from some, and boy am I glad! This is a great camera for kids. My son absolutely loves it. It takes decent enough pictures which can be altered and played around with on a PC. It is easy for him to understand all of the functions and he can do it all himself, so he doesn't have to put up with the frustration of asking for help from an adult. The only moan I would make is that the reviewer who states that it comes with a case is WRONG, it doesn't so if you want one it has to be purchased separately. (It does come with a wrist strap).

a good toy

Gabrielle from Manchester, UK - 4 out of 5.

I bought this as a christmas gift for my 6 year old and he absolutely loved it! No it doesn't have the best quality pictures in the world, but it's a toy. The pictures it produces are perfectly satisfying to young children who are more concerned with the fact they have taken the pictures themselves, and can put rabbit ears on their nearest and dearest that the quality of the image. and the games and special effects are fun too. I did have an issue with not being able to turn it off at one point, and i would recommend buying an additional memory card, but on the whole a fun toy for children.

bought this camera for our 4 year old grandson and he is finding it so much fun taking over 800 pictures on his first outing. its easy to use and very durable . only fault if it can be called a fault is it is not easy to see the screen when outside in daylight. recomend good quality batteries and a reasonable sd card. can download onto computer or watch on your tv with cables supplied.

Great product...very amusing

Kerry Nicholson from UK - 5 out of 5.

I read all the reviews about this camera before I bought it and was worried about picture quality but my worries were unfounded. I bought this for my 5 year old's birthday and he has taken some really good pictures with it and loves the fact that he can change the pictures both on the camera and the computer afterwards. I also have a 2 year old who loves this camera and takes hundreds of pictures on it most of which we have to delete. I would recommend this to anyone as we have had loads of fun with it and you really don't have to worry about it getting damaged like a normal camera.

Robust, easy-to-use camera, big thumbs up!

C. Campbell from surrey, UK - 5 out of 5.

We bought the kidizoom for our daughter who turns 7. She had been using our mobilephones and digital SLRs to take pics so thought she'll appreciate having her own. She LOVES the kidizoom as it's a fun gadget with the frames and photo editor functions. It was the robust design of this camera which persuaded us to go for this instead of an entry-level kodak digital camera. Whilst the picture quality is not great, she doesn't mind it and in fact, we think it's great that she is trying to figure out how to get better pictures from it. Downsides are - need a cover for the lens, no zoom and no software to stabilise pic quality.

Kidizoom

E. Parsons from UK - 5 out of 5.

Great product! We bought this for our 5 year old son and he hasn't put it down since. As the other reviews have said, the picture quality isn't great, but then it is just a toy. As long as you remember that and the fact that it's designed for a child you'll be impressed with it.
I've seen some reviews saying the battery life is rubbish, but I bought some really long lasting rechargeables and it seems fine.

You will need to invest in a memory card to prevent losing everything when the batteies do run out, but a card is pretty cheap these days.
One other thing to point out, show your child how NOT to delete everything by mistake, it's easily done and the resulting screaming fit is terrible.

All in all a VERY good toy.

rubbish

S. Findlay from Scotland - 1 out of 5.

This camera only works in bright outdoor light. Then you can get the odd decent photo - if you are lucky. But indoors, or in even cloudy light the photos come out really dark, or just black. Not worth spending the money on. Your child will be hugely disappointed.

Lots of fun, value for money!

S. J. King from UK - 4 out of 5.

I thought the camera was the latest edition however it is the old version, but still fun and good value for money. Takes pictures indoors and outdoors, quality can be poor, not printed out yet, but my daughter loves it. She also enjoys the games even at just 2 and a half!!! I would recommend this toy, it is a fun durable toy and has been dropped many times!!!

Great TOY, my son loves it!!

Adams Dad from Northampton - 4 out of 5.

First things first, there are some wholly misleading reviews here about this product by people who've bought this with way too high expectations.

This is a TOY camera aimed at pre-schoolers which takes very basic snapshots. Yes, the picture quality is what you'd have got from a camera phone a couple of years ago but so what, its exactly what i would have expected and my four year old has no appreciation whatsoever about image quality, so long as he can see on the screen what he's taken a snap of then its job done.

The camera also takes very basic video clips, has some fun editing and photo manipulation features and on top of that a handfull of basic games to keep him amused.

DO NOT buy this expecting to print pictures or prepare to be dissapointed, this is not a standard compact quality camera in a rugged body for kids, that isn't whats its aimed at, you have to either go for the toy end of the market which this is and which will take the abuse of small children or a cheap basic proper camera which will certainly produce better results but which would have lasted at least a day before being smashed into a thousand pieces on our floor.

This camera is big, bright, easy to hold, simple to use for a small child and ideal for use at home or for taking on holiday to let your child get involved in taking fun shots while you take the proper ones, it holds 200 photos on the internal memory and uses SD cards (only up to 2gb max size) if you want to take more. It also connects via USB to a PC if you so wish.

Overall i'm more than satisfied with it and would recommend it so long as you are realisitc with your expectations and its' probably best suited to under 5's as children over this age may be able to handle a cheap proper camera and get better results if they want prints etc.

i brought this for my six year old son.I was a bit unsure on reviews about buying it, but my son really wanted it. its briallant! I have not touched the thing! my son has worked it all out himself and has already more than 100 photos on it! Sometimes if not enough light the photo comes out dark. great camera

the twits from ireland - 5 out of 5.

I bought this camera for my son about 5 months ago. I thought it would be ideal for him as he is autistic and would has already wrecked my digital camera. This has been the best present I have ever got him. Its durable and he plays with it constantly so much so that the bottom of it is destroyed as we continually change the batteries. That would be my only problem is that it would be far better if it had a charger as it is very sore on batteries. Granted the picture quality isnt the best but im not looking for the next Ansel Adams, just something he can have fun with and he certainly does. He has a great time after downloading the pics too as they can be distorted and added to. All in all I think this is a great wee camera.

A. Brooks from U.K. - 4 out of 5.

This is a great toy and my five year old son has taken some great photos and videos. You can alter your photos and add horns, frames etc to the pictures. My son has also found the games very entertaining too. The camera has been a hit.

The image quality is fine for a five year old as is the sound and video. Buy one for your little one and watch them explore the world around them.

Great buy

I brought this camera for my 4 year old son for Christmas, as I was buying a 'grown up'camera for my older daughter and I knew there would be arguments if he didn't have one as well!!! It has been a great buy, he loved taking photos over Christmas, and the games have kept him occupied as well. We haven't as yet printed out any photos, so I am unable to comment on the quality. All in all it was a great purchase and he has thoroughly enjoyed it. PS it is very durable, and has survived numerous falls down stairs!!

This camera was bought online as a christmas present. My grandson has had hours of fun with it. It is sturdy and easy for a 2 year old to use. A shame...

The Fryster from Southampton - 2 out of 5.

..that the pictures taken with this camera are so appalingly bad. The rest of the camera is excellent - good build, good software, good layout of buttons etc. It is true that a child does not care so much that the photo quality is so dire but as a parent it would be nice to be able to print the odd one off to stick on the fridge etc - but they are so bad even when taken in full daylight that it's not worth it. I'm amazed that VTech couldn't have sourced some decent electronics for this camera - it seems that they've bought a job lot of 10 year old mobile phone camera internals - yes the photos are that bad. If I was VTech I'd be a bit ashamed of this product.

Great first camera

Carl Waring from Buckinghamshire, UK - 5 out of 5.

My son received this camera as a Christmas present from his grandmother (lucky boy), and while pleased with it I have to admit to a bit of brand snobbery: I thought that the Fisher Price one was likely to be better and that the Vtech one probably wasn't going to be up to much. I stand corrected. Having spoken to friends whose children have received different cameras, it seems to be the pick of the bunch.

The camera is very durable - 3 year old boys aren't noted for the gentle way they treat things just as most digital cameras aren't noted for their ability to withstand being dropped or thrown or inserted (don't ask, it's a long story). It's a good, fun camera that lets children get involved with learning how to use cameras properly, how to take pictures, how to transfer pictures and gives them a real sense of achievement when they see how people react to the photos they've taken.

The picture quality is adequate, but then it's a camera for small children. Annie Leibovitz probably wouldn't use it much, but then she wouldn't have spent Christmas Day taking 150 photographs of the floor before being shown the viewfinder.

In all, it's a really good, fun and entertaining first camera.

Nice toy camera

M Raven from UK - 4 out of 5.

I was a bit apprehensive about buying this after reading some of the reviews here. However, my son who is just 6 has co-ordination problems and tends to be a tad clumsy, therefore durability was a big factor over picture quality. Time enough for a "proper" camera when he's a bit older.

The picture quality isn't great but it's functional and my son has been able to take photographs of us all and edit them with some of the "hilarious" edits in the accompanying software. Am not sure why he always adds horns to every photo of me! Apparently there is scope in the editing software to refine pictures up to 3 megapixel quality but I haven't explored this with him as yet.

The camera also comes with a few games which my son has enjoyed playing. All in all I think this has been a good purchase and would recommend it mainly for it's durability and the opportunity it gives children to learn about transferring photos onto a computer and practice editing.

I've given it 4 stars but 5 for durability and fun.

Great concept, awful photo quality

Mr. S. Parker - 1 out of 5.

This is a toy. You cannot use it to print out photos, and the pictures taken with it are not even up to cheap mobile phone standard -

I don't know what the image resolution is, but pictures taken are best viewed at around 100x100 pixels in 8 bit colour resolution. The exposure is uncontrolable which means 90% of the time the pictures come out completely black or white.

If you want a Toy that a two year old cannot break - buy this product. If you want a disappointed 5 year old, where all there photo's come out unusable, unprintable or unviewable don't buy this product.

Best Xmas Present Ever!

Mrs. C. Cooper-wallis - 5 out of 5.

We bought my 3 yr old son this camera for xmas this year I was a bit apprehensive after reading reviews but I have to say it is fantastic. No the picture quality isn't the best but its not designed for that. My son hasn't stopped playing with it and by the end of boxing day had taken 400 pictures! My 9 year old has also enjoyed playing with it. The fun bits of adding hats and borders to the photos is really good as are the games. Definately excellent value for money and would definately recommend it.

Good strong camera for kids

Anonymous - 5 out of 5.

My little boy who's three really wanted a camera for christmas and he wanted this one. Looking at the reviews I was rather disturbed by what I read and almost didn't buy it. However, I managed to have a go on his nursery's Fisher Price camera (whose reviews were even worse) and I thought it seemed okay and decided to go ahead as I didn't want to disappoint him.

Before wrapping it I decided to check the product over and I am pleased I did because it was a nightmare to get through the plastic outer-casing and then I needed to locate a phillips screwdriver before putting the batteries in. That all took about half hour. I would recommend getting it all prepped and ready to go before handing over to an eager child.

I am pleased I ignored the negative reviews because his little face when he saw the camera will remain imprinted in my mind forever.

The first thing you notice when you take it out of the box is it is not heavy and the texture is good as it provides a good grip for little hands. It is very easy to use and children will find their own way around the screens. He took lots of photos Christmas Day enjoying making it flash in people's eyes and today, Boxing Day he is taking some pretty well lined up photos. No heads missing today. The review regarding the viewfinder and the digital display not lining up is true but I have taught him to look at the display and problem solved. I think I paid something like £37.50 for the camera which I thought was pretty good value for money. It's educational value is good too for imagination, motor-skills and creative to name a few.

Overall I think this is a good sound product and built to endure the knocks children will give it. I wouldn't pay more than £40 for it hence the reason I think it was good value for money.

DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA

Mr. M. J. Farrow from uk - 1 out of 5.

i bought this camera for my 5yr old daughter for christmas, she opened it and was really pleased with it. i put 4 brand new batteries in it and turned it on. that was about as good as it got!! The delay on the capture of the photo (at least 15 secs) is far too long to be of any use to a child who wants to be able to take shots in succession. Also the batteries were half used by the time we had turned it on and tried to take some pictures. Very disappointing gift, in terms of quality and value for money, we already have it repackaged to send back.

Don't be put off!

G. Aldis from Staffordshire, England - 5 out of 5.

My twins were desperate for their own digital cameras for their 5th birthday, so I started to research what was available. We nearly didn't get them at all, as the reviews were, in some cases, quite damning, but I'm so glad that we did! The picture quality might not be as good as some would like, but it's fine for what they want. In no time, they'd mastered taking photos, adding googly eyes/pirate eye patches, deleting any really bad pictures and playing the games. We were really worried about the battery consumption, but it's been two weeks now, and we've not had to change them yet, despite quite heavy usage!
Having seen the enjoyment that my kids have got out of them, I would certainly recommend these for children of around 4-6. A cheap "grown up" camera may take better pictures, but it would also be more difficult to handle, easier to block the lens, be less durable and wouldn't have the fun features. These cameras are designed with kids in mind and, as such, do the job perfectly.

Best birthday present ever!

L. Betts from Wiltshire - 4 out of 5.

We bought this for my 4 year old for his birthday and it really is the best thing ever as far as he's concerned.

The pictures aren't great quality but I bought this with the full knowledge that it was a toy, that it is intended for quite young children and that it's main purpose is to be robust. So far it has lived up to expectations.

My son took 200+ photos on the first morning. Most of them are blurred snaps, but then he's 4, not David Bailey. However, he did manage to take a fantastic photo of his 1 year old sister.

If you recognise this toy's limitations then it's a great present. If you're expecting top quality pictures then buy a normal, high res digital camera and not a toy.

My son loves this camera.....make sure you get the latest version though!!

A. C. Heath from United Kingdom - 4 out of 5.

We bought this camera for my 3 year old son this time last year after showing an avid interest in using my own Digital SLR's! As has been pointed out in previous reviews, image resolution is low and shots with flash are often burnt out. However, even with that, my son loved the camera showing great pride in taking pictures and immediately showing the person the picture displayed on the monitor (no matter how good or bad it was!). Always with a grin and enjoying it immensely - which is what it's all about IMO. Sure, the twin viewfinder suffers from parallax error at close distances but my son soon learned to frame using the rear monitor. We never bothered trying to print any images as I know there's little point with the 640x480 resolution and anyhow, at his age, my sons more interested in taking pictures than printing them.
As for build quality, the camera appeared very good with a robust casing covering what is obviously a low quality digital camera. I have to say 'appeared' as I noticed around a month ago that the camera often wouldn't power up despite new sets of batteries. My son was somewhat upset at this so I checked the Vtech website and dropped them a short email (having no original receipt etc). To my surprise they apologised and stright away sent me a returns form by first class post. Three days after returning the form we received by courier a brand new camera! Thank you Vtech.
What I noticed straight away is that the image quality, particularly with flash, is improved immensely. The packaging states 'improved sensor quality' & instructions mention improvements with the latest versions - I would say that's correct. Close up shots with flash no longer burn out every time - which is what the majority of shots on this camera are going to be after all. Image quality on the small monitor also looks somewhat better than the old version & the delay between pressing the shutter and the picture being taken, though not immediate, is again improved. Incidentally, the instructions mention that the 'photo editor' includes an interpolation feature to enlarge files up to 2mB in order to print 'high quality' images. Of course, interpolation isn't going to get you sharp prints but it gives you an option if you want to try and get something half decent.
So, if you are looking for a fun camera for your kids and aren't going to lose sleep over image quality or a few shortcomings, I don't believe that you can go wrong with one of these (just try and make sure that you get the latest version). Buy a cheap SD card and let them shoot to their hearts content! If your kids are older and more camera aware then look elsewhere. Otherwise, this is a fun introduction to photography & I have to say kudos to Vtech for being so proactive in offering a replacement.

£50 well spent

Karen B from Rayne, Essex, UK - 5 out of 5.

I bought this camera for my daughter's 3rd birthday and I have to say it is fantastic, so much so that my 6 year old is now desperately jealous and has written to father christmas to ask for one. If I had read some of the reviews on here before buying I would probably not have bought it, luckily I didn't bother to. Yes sure, the quality is not perfect but it is tough, easy to use and produces reasonable results in the hands of a 3yr and 6yr old. They love the extra frames and added stamps which mean you can put granny in a pirates hat or transport your barbie to a snowy scene. They haven't explored the games yet but I did when they went to bed and particularly liked the one which makes a puzzle using their own photos. I think that if you have an unusually steady handed and very careful child then sure, buy them a real camera but if you have real kids, then buy this. I speak as someone whose 6yr old (who is a quite normal, fairly careful girl) has now had 3 grown up cameras ranging in price from £20 to £40 each and has broken everyone of them by one drop onto a hard surface. We shall be instructing father christmas to get us another one please!

My son loves this camera!

A. V. Barnett-Ward from UK - 4 out of 5.

I read the reviews on this camera before buying it and decided that durability and ease of use were more important than picture quality - not least because it was to be a present for my 4yr old, but his 2yr old little brother was bound to use it, so it had to be tough enough to cope with a toddler. We opened and experimented with it before giving it to our son, so we knew how to get decent images (Hold it still, make sure there's plenty of light - natural if possible - and don't get too close), and could coach him.

My son is utterly delighted with it. Both boys have taken decent pictures with it, and my 4yr old was familiar with the main functions within minutes. he can snap away with it and has produced a lovely record of his typical day, and what interests him. He's never had a computer console, so he's just as pleased with the (very basic) games as with the camera.

It is only really camera phone quality, and you get the best results with natural light, but I remember my first camera being much more fiddly to use and giving poorer results. My son is more interested in taking photos and knowing he has them than actually reviewing them so he has yet to notice that I delete the less successful ones!

My only gripe is the batteries. We are using duracell and getting a decent battery life from them, but rechargeable ones would be so much easier (and cheaper) to use. The memory cards are pretty cheap, so it's worth getting one to avoid losing photos when the batteries go.

I wouldn't get one of these for an older child who could be trusted to look after a proper camera, but for a pre-schooler (especially one with younger siblings), it is just the job.

Kidizoom

Ms. Gemma L. Ellis - 5 out of 5.

I find the kidizoom camera to be a great toy for the children to play with. The features on it are great fun and give the whole family a laugh. It has been dropped many times by my 4 yr old and has proved to be very durable. My two children love taking it everywhere with them, and we get some great photos which the kids have taken, some very interesting, and we all love taking the time as a family to look at them either on the TV or computer. For the price of the camera i believe the quality to be perfectly fine, considering that it is only a child's toy.

Not bad for a kids camera!

Mark Jefferies - 5 out of 5.

I bought this camera for my three year old nieces just before christmas. They don't take fascinating photos with it but they do take a lot of photos! When I bought the camera I wasn't expecting the quality to be like an adults camera so I wasn't disappointed. To be honest they have just as much fun on the games and other things but they do like looking back at there photos and showing them to everyone, even if its just a picture of some grass!

Fun fun fun in the sun!

M. Shaw from Manchester - 4 out of 5.

I bought this camera for my 4year old daughter just before our summer holiday to Greece. I was not sure that a digital camera for children would be very good in terms of design and picture quality, but I was proven wrong in a number of way. The Kidizoom has many great features, which kept my daughter occupied for hours. She loved editing her photos with frames and stamps, which mainly made her mother and me look silly. She said it made her feel really grown up. I think the design of this camera is very good, with chunky handles that my daughter could grip onto easily. Also the double viewfinder helped her to locate exactly what she wanted in her shot.

Overall I would say this camera is a good present for children over 3, it is not too expensive and has a funky and modern design unlike some other examples I found in shops. I would definitely buy more products from VTech.

Terrible picture quality. Just buy a real camera!

S. Doble from Dublin - 1 out of 5.

My five year old daughter is a dab hand at taking photos with our camera and mobile phone. She was very keen on a camera of her own for Christmas and so we picked the Kidizoom and are ever so disappointed with it.

The picture quality is just appalling. Shots are all blurred and tiled. We tried the camera out ourselves but fared no better than our daughter. The cheapest of disposable cameras takes a better picture than this. We have never considered it worth while printing a picture and our daughter has lost interest in the camera.

We contacted V Tech to complain about it and (after two e-mails)they wrote back and said "the camera is not intended to provide the same quality pictures as a commercial digital camera". It is rated at .3 megapixels compared to 5.0 - 8.0 on an adult camera. The point of this camera is its durability. To be fair, V-Tech did offer that we could return the product and obtain credit against another VTech toy.

The price of this camera wasn't that of a cheap junky toy. We expected this camera to actually take photos worth having. Would it cost VTech so much extra to manufacture this camera in such a way that it could take a proper photograph?

And a final minor gripe, although it is called "kidizoom" it has no zoom feature.

A friend's child had a Fisher Price kids camera and its photos are equally poor, so the message has to be to buy the child a real camera when they are old enough not to drop it!

dissapointed

R. J. Burton - 1 out of 5.

Both my son (3) and daughter(4 1/2) love using my digital camera and have both taken good pictures, so when I saw this camera I thought they would love it too. i was very wrong, bought them 1 each for christmas and it rarely gets used (unlike my camera and mobile phone camera) As with the other reviews, the LED screen is slow, ok if you are taking a picture of still object. Haven't even attempted to print any off. buy a real camera. Dont waste your money on this.

Excellent for any budding photographer

K. Parkinson from Devon, UK - 5 out of 5.

We bought this for our daughter for xmas and she has had so much fun with it - i can't rate it highly enough! She took 300 photos on xmas day ( we had to wipe the memory half way through the day to do this) - we had a great laugh looking at the results on the telly. No they aren't top quality but what do you expect from a kid's toy - I would say most young children would be more than happy with the results. It also takes video and you can play games on it too. My daughter enjoys taking pictures of her friends and we take it out when we go for walks and she takes pictures of anything and everything. I would agree that £60 is alot of money and didn't pay that but got it whilst on offer on Amazon for £40. Don't expect an adult camera in kids packaging and I would imagine most children will love this. We have only replaced the batteries once since xmas day and it's been used every day and she has never lost any pictures.

What a load of rubbish

M. Higgins from Kent - 1 out of 5.

I bought this for my daughter for christmas and christmas morning once it was open I was totally disappointed the images were so slow in catching up with the view finder, I took it back boxing morning with disgust and paid the same amount of money and got her an adult camera which is much easier to use and also it is rechargable to no buying AA batteries every 5 minutes

Great Kids Camera !!

Dean 654 from London - 5 out of 5.

I bought 2 of these for my daughters aged 4 and 5 years and they love them. The picture quality is good for a kids camera but obviously isn't the greatest. Ok, some of the pictures can be blurry as kids don't have the steadiest hands but with an easily delete function you can clean up the cameras memory quickly and easily keeping the good clear pics they've taken. At the end of the day its a kids camera and they take pictures of anything and everything. It holds well over 100 pictures without the need for an additional memory card and has some fun features. I would recommended this camera as a first camera for the very young. If your looking for a perfect picture with a fast shutter speed etc, try a Canon..

Barely a digital camera

G. Patterson - 1 out of 5.

The first thing i notice after ordering the camera for my 4 year old daughter was the twin eye view finder didn't line up with the LCD. So all pictures my daughter took chopped everyone's heads off!! If V-tech had a higher megapixel version of this camera, lined up the view finder it would be very suitable for a child. I don't think it is worth the 60 quid!!

A let down

Mr. Richard Morgan from Wales - 1 out of 5.

We bought this as a christmas present for our 5 year old son. Within 3 hours of opening and after 15 minutes playing with it, the new batteries ran out, we put some more in and they ran out. We charged some batteries overnight, they ran out in 15 minutes. Then the photo button stopped working, buttons on the back stopped working.

There are some positives though, if the power lasted longer and the buttons worked, the photos can be changed using a photo editor, which was so funny, we were all in stitches from laughing at the transformations you could do.

Short lived though, camera just turns itself off AND....you can lose all the images you have taken. The instructions do warn you that, but hey, come on, some shots are priceless and the damn thing just keeps letting you down.

I'm off to the shop for a full refund.

Better off getting him a real camera and wrapping it up in bubblewrap.

Shockingly bad picture quality

J. Carson from South Shields, England - 2 out of 5.

I just bought this for my 2 1/2 year old daughter to take on holiday. It looks solid enough and has some nice features. The first thing you notice though is how slow the screen update is, it looks about 2 frames a second. So even for an adult getting a decent shot is tricky. The pictures themselves are of a quality I've never seen from a digital camera. Something probably on par with the first camera phones in bad light. Pictures are grainy and quite a lot are blurred. If I'd seen the quality of this thing before I'd bought it then I wouldn't have bothered. However, my 2 year old seems to like it.
